Three Egerton University students appeared in the Milimani Law Court on Monday, October 31, charged with extorting millions of shillings from parents and candidates by offering to leak the contents of the Kenya National Examinations.
The suspects were released on a Ksh1 million bond or Ksh500,000 with surety of the same amount.
The DCI says the three have been using messaging apps including WhatsApp and Telegram to scam naive parents and students.
DCI disclosed in a statement that each of the groups had acquired a following of more than 13,000 members, who were brought together by the prospect of getting leaked KCSE examination papers.
Members of the groups were reportedly pushed to pay for the papers on the social media platforms following a detailed process to save time.
The three suspects, who cops say were operating out of the main campus of Egerton in Njoro, Nakuru County, were allegedly living large thanks to their illicit activities.
Parents and applicants who wanted the fake papers had to pay anything from Ksh5,000 to Ksh20,000.
They were apprehended by detectives working for the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), who had begun an inquiry into the nefarious activities of the university students.
A fourth-year Bachelor of Education (Mathematics and Physics) student going by the moniker Professor Lenchodas led police on a stakeout to his Njoro home on Thursday night, according to a statement released by the DCI.
One of the apprehended suspect’s accomplices was posing as Professor Ranchodas, and he led the detectives to the other two fourth-year students who were implicated.
Six mobile phones, eight identification cards, and ATM cards were seized by detectives during the raid, with the DCI noting that they were all linked to fake Telegram and bank accounts.
The DCI affirmed that extensive measures have been taken by the Ministry of Education and KNEC personnel to prevent exam cheating and maintain the integrity of the examinations.
Class eight students will take their KCPE examinations from November 28 to November 30, while KCSE exams will be held from November 21 to December 23.
