He was raised by a single mother. His mother worked as a nursery school teacher. Eliud is the youngest of four siblings. For his high school education, he attended Kapitel Secondary School in Nandi County. After completing high school, he did not progress to the tertiary level because her mother could not afford school fees.
During his schooldays, Eliud used to run to and from school until he got used to running. The school was located two miles (approximately 3.2 km) away from their home. He debuted his professional athletics career in 2002 when he took part in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships as a long-distance runner.
During the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, he won the bronze medal in the 5000 m race. He won a silver medal during the Beijing Olympic Games. He is a five-time World Championship 5000 m finalist.
