He was raised by a single mother. His mother worked as a nursery school teacher. Eliud is the youngest of four siblings. For his high school education, he attended Kapitel Secondary School in Nandi County. After completing high school, he did not progress to the tertiary level because her mother could not afford school fees.
Career
During his schooldays, Eliud used to run to and from school until he got used to running. The school was located two miles (approximately 3.2 km) away from their home. He debuted his professional athletics career in 2002 when he took part in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships as a long-distance runner.
During the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, he won the bronze medal in the 5000 m race. He won a silver medal during the Beijing Olympic Games. He is a five-time World Championship 5000 m finalist. Kipchoge won silver medals during the 2007 World Championships, 2008 Summer Olympics and 2010 Commonwealth Games.
In 2012, he switched to marathon running. In his marathon debut, he won the 2013 Hamburg Marathon in a course record time. Eliud is currently the world record holder in the marathon with a time of 2:01:39. This record was set on September 16, 2018, during the Berlin Marathon. Eliud is also the first person to run the marathon distance in less than two hours.
