The Employment and Labour Relations Court in Nakuru has issued an injunction to put an end to the strike that has been going on at Egerton University lecturers in order to make room for negotiations.
In her judgement dated October 25, 2022, Lady Justice Hellen Wasilwa ruled that dialogue between the institution’s administration and the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) was necessary to break the impasse.
In addition, Justice Wasilwa noted that the court will issue further guidance on the subject on December 1, 2022.
Professors at Egerton University went on strike on Monday of last week to protest wage cutbacks of up to 43% effective in 2020.
Learning was paralyzed as the strike reached its second week, and the management of the institution filed a petition with the court to end the standstill so that discussions could begin.
On October 5, at the Nakuru Athletics Club, the Uasu Egerton Chapter convened a Special General Meeting to discuss the welfare of its more than 600 members. After a day of debate, the chapter issued a strike notice.
The national headquarters of Uasu supported the strike and placed responsibility on the university administration and the council for ignoring the union’s concerns about the worsening welfare of its members.
“Our members shall withdraw their labour on October 17 after the expiry of the seven days’ strike notice which was issued on October 11 until their pertinent concerns are addressed exhaustively,” said Uasu Secretary-General Constantine Wasonga In a letter addressed to the chairman of the University Council
