Brief History of Moi University
A Presidential Working Party was established in January 1981 under the leadership of distinguished Canadian academic Dr. Colin B. Mackay to develop specific recommendations for the establishment of a second university in Kenya.
In September 1981, the report was delivered to the then-President, H. E. Hon. Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi. The report strongly recommended that the new university should have a distinct bias towards technology.
A joint Kenyan and UNESCO team prepared a report titled “Project for the Second University” in October 1983. As a result, the government founded Moi University in the middle of 1984, and construction on the campus near Eldoret started the following year.
The university administration relocated to the current main campus (Kesses), Uasin Gishu, from its temporary offices in Eldoret on July 29, 1986.
The University was however officially inaugurated on December 6, 1985 by the then Chancellor, His Excellency the second President of Kenya, Hon. Daniel Toroitich. Arap Moi.
Since then, the University has experienced phenomenal growth from its initial one faculty in 1984, to a total of 15 Schools, nine Directorates and two Institutes presently.
The total student population currently is over 52, 000, distributed across Diploma, Undergraduate, Masters, PostGraduate Diploma and Doctorate of Philosophy programmes in diverse fields.
The University currently has four campuses, namely: Main Campus, Town Campus, Eldoret West Campus and Odera Akang’o Campus. The Town campus hosts the College of Health Sciences (Medical Complex), School of Aerospace Sciences (Rivatex) and School of Law (Annex) while the Eldoret West Campus is home to our Privately Sponsored Students Programmes (PSSP).
Moi University is proud to have two constituent colleges, namely Garissa and Rongo that also offer unique undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and a total of six Satellite Campuses in Nairobi, Kitale, Alupe, Kericho, Coast (Mombasa) and Nakuru.
