A total of Four students from Kanga School in Migori have earned an opportunity to represent their country at the artistic competition in the USA.
After the students won first place and were ranked best at the national scientific congress competition held at Kabianga University under the auspices of the new Afrika innovations foundation,it is now their item in the USA.
The students created a device that can alert the fire service via a short message sent via a mobile phone when a fire or even an oil leak is detected.
Learners developed this device over the course of six months, and if it were to be used, they believe it might help lessen the tragic fires that have occurred in many schools around the nation.
One of the students, Dexel Yell, claims that the device has the capacity to detect smoke while also sending an SMS alerting the phone connected to it of the impending danger.
“It has the ability to recognise the presence of smoke and then send an alert via message to the fire department and anybody in charge of the building.
We believe this can reduce further harm, they also added that the path was not easy because they lacked the necessary materials and tools to fully realize their vision.
They further indicated that the device is designed to be installed in any building ranging from schools, hospitals and even private homes as it is portable
This school has now asked the government to recognize and encourage innovations, particularly among kids who have skills beyond academics.
“There is a need for the government and the Ministry of Education to identify students who have different abilities and talents and offer them support. We are moving in a world where we cannot survive without innovations,” said Mr Odira.
Stem subjects such as sciences, mathematics, engineering and technology. This is where the world is moving towards,” added Odira.
