KNUT Demands C (plain) Teachers Be Posted To Junior Secondary. The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) wants the Teachers Service Commission to consider deploying teachers who attained grade C (Plain) in their national examinations to secondary schools.
Currently, the Commission only recruits candidates who attained grade C+ to teach in secondary schools.
KNUT Secretary-General Collins Oyuu lauded the government’s move of gathering views from the public on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
He said that the union will discuss with the employer on issues and policies that have plagued the welfare of teachers for a while.
KNUT and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Teachers (KUPPET) have called on politicians to abstain from interfering with the recruitment of teachers.
Following the advertisement of more than 30,000 teacher vacancies, it has been reported that some politicians were allegedly plotting to interfere with the recruitment of teachers.

Oyuu declared that politicians will not be allowed to interfere with the recruitment of teachers.
“Recruitment of teachers is the mandate of the Commission. Anybody who is purporting to have exercise in the recruitment should be condemned in the highest terms possible,” said Oyuu.
Oyuu regretted the centralization of the recruitment of teachers which gives room to politicians the opportunity to influence the recruitment of their relatives.
“We cannot subject this noble profession to selfish politicians meddling with matters of education. Politicians should completely keep off. This is not a chief’s affair,” added Oyuu.
Oyuu urged politicians to identify and address any issues related to how the Commission is dispensing its services but not to act on its behalf.
On the promotion of teachers, Oyuu revealed that they had written to the Commission and that I had promised to address the issues.
The government has pledged to address teacher shortages in public schools by 116,000 within the next two financial years.
This was revealed by the Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu who revealed that the government is planning to employ 58,000 teachers yearly to address the teacher shortage.
The teachers will be recruited from more than 300,000 graduate but unemployed teachers across the country.
According to Collins Oyuu, and his KUPPET counterpart Akelo Misori, it is TSC’s responsibility to recruit and manage teachers.
