The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has revealed that it will be holding the second mass voter registration in January 2022.

Speaking during the Editor’s Guild Annual Convention, IEBC acting CEO, Hussein Marjan, stated that finances for the exercise had been allocated by the national treasury.

The money will cater for the second round of enhanced continuous voter registration (ECVR) in January 2022.”

IEBC will be pushing to reach more eligible voters in the exercise, who were left out during the first voter registration exercise that spanned more than a month.

The first mass voter registration exercise kicked off on October 4, 2021, and ended on November 5, 2021, with IEBC failing to meet its voter registration target by a huge margin.

The registration saw the electoral body register 1.5 million voters, which was an average of 4.5 million voters shy of the total target of 6 million.

The commission had earlier stated that they would not be launching another registration, owing to that the national treasury had declined to allocate the total amount of money they needed for the entire electoral process, which totaled Ksh40.9 billion.

IEBC Chair, Wafula Chebukati, had earlier hinted that the registration would recommence when he appeared before the senate committee on Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights.

The commission also revealed that it would be extending the registration to the diaspora community, although not all Kenyans abroad will get an opportunity to vote.
