Primary School Teachers in Job groups C3 and C4 are literary scrambling and waiting with bated breath for their only chance to succeed retiring headteachers in July 2022.
It is in the public domain that thousands of school heads both from Primary and Secondary schools are soon retiring in about two months.
Information from the Teachers Service Commission reaching our desk is that a total of 1,025 school heads whose two-year contracts will be ending in July.
The Commission had extended the 1,594 headteachers and Secondary school principals’ working period in the year 2020 after they had attained the mandatory retirement age of 60.
Following the expiry of their extended term, the Commission’s CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia said the school heads will be released to pave way for new recruitment of qualified candidates. She however observed that 569 of the school heads were to be retained until December 2022 because their contracts had not expired.
She further noted that the main objective for this extension was to attain stability in the respective schools following the long break that resulted from form the 2020 Covid 19 pandemic.
The Schemes of Service( SOS) as a system of grading teachers in the country was rendered redundant paving the way for the now Career Progression Guidelines( CPG) after a job evaluation exercise carried out in 2016.
Here the Commission placed Senior teachers in primary schools in two cadres( groups) i.e Senior Teacher 11( T-Scale 7) also popularly called Grade C2 and Senior Teacher 1( T-Scale 8) commonly known as Grade C3.
According to the Commission’s system of grading teachers, Grade C2 is an entry grade into the administrative cadre upon which teachers serving in this cadre move to grade C3 after completing three years.
Moreover, grade C4 teachers, popularly known as Deputy Headteacher 11(T-Scale 9) are deputy headteachers.
It is important to note that teachers serving in both C3 and C4 are potential candidates in succeeding the retiring school headteachers given their vast experiences accumulated over years of running schools!
