The country’s teacher employer revealed that some letters written by teachers to the commission contained spelling mistakes.

Dr. Ruben Nthamburi, director of the Commission’s Quality Assurance and Standards (QAS), said they want to professionalize the teaching service to match other professions such as law, engineering and medicine; He said that they have already told the universities what kind of teacher they want.

He said that the challenge facing him at present is that some teachers cannot communicate effectively, due to which the Kenya University and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has reduced Grade C (Plain) in both English and Mathematics for all of them.

Motivated to strictly enforce those who wanted to. Bachelor’s degree in Education in both Arts and Sciences during recent placements. “You saw in the newspapers when we said we wanted the program to be properly reorganized, what happened? Shout out, that this can’t work. You know change is painful and always resisted. But what we’re saying is TSC is the customer. The teacher’s picker noted Dr. Nthamburi

He went on to say that: “The challenges we face today, if you look at some of the letters being written by teachers, there are a lot of spelling mistakes in them… We want qualified teachers who can communicate well. ”

Dr. Nthamburi, who represented the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Commission, Dr. Nancy Macharia, recently in Naivasha, to the Senate Committee on Education chaired by Dr. Elise and Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) on CBC Sensitization was addressing.

He stressed that in order to professionalize the teaching service and match it with other professions, the entry requirements must be strictly observed and adhered to, in this case the need to introduce Professional Development Training Teacher Professional Development (TPD). need, and then think about how teachers will be remunerated and motivated.

“The question is what do we want best for our teachers, for the future of a teacher in the country; 21st century teachers..we would like to have a professional teacher, and we are not counting on that, reiterated Dr. Nthamburi.

Dr. Nthamburi said that universities should understand the new areas and emerging issues in education so that they can align their content accordingly, and revealed that they have previously met all the vice-chancellors of the universities and soon they will all join the university. Will meet Vice Chancellor and Faculty. Deans will consider how they will align their courses

Some universities have gone very fast, they have started linking their degree courses with CBC,” said Dr Nthamburi.

Recently, a battle for supremacy between TSC and universities has emerged over who controls the university program, with a proposed policy for reviewing TSC’s standards of education and training.

Policy titled Framework on Entry Requirements in Teaching Services which was prepared by Dr. Nthamburi; and to sensitize the Dean of the University, School of Education on the teacher education framework on the requirements for admission to the teaching service.

As per the proposed policy, the Commission seeks to revamp (change) the Bachelor of Education programme; Which is one of the most famous and popular programs offered in almost every university in the country, and replace it with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Science (BSc) with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGD).

The Commission was of the view that from September this year, universities should start offering this program which will take three years along with one year for PGD.

This means that in the near future, the commission will register and employ teachers only after successful completion of a professional postgraduate diploma.

As per the proposed policy framework the entry grade in BA or BSc, Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education mean (KCSE) grade of w B- (minus) and in three teaching subjects will be a mean grade of C+.

This was a change from the current requirement where universities admit students to Bachelor of Education programs in two subjects of specialization with a minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ (Plus) and above or its equivalent C+ (Plus).

The CBC Education Task Force, in its final report, recommended that the University Education Commission (CUE) should accelerate the development and review of university programs to align with the proposed three pathways to senior secondary school.

Do you think this is a right step by TSC to change the entry grade to Teachers entering the teaching careers? Share your thoughts below
