The Teachers Service Commission, decided to employ teachers through an internship program in an effort to fill staffing shortfalls at public primary and secondary schools that were still being worked out.
Under this program new , teachers would be employed temporarily to serve alongside permanent, pensionable teachers.
Even if both groups carry out the same teaching duties, teacher interns receive substantially less in monthly benefits than their permanent colleagues.
While in the process of hiring of teachers for elementary and secondary schools, the intern teachers are given access to nine documents, that are listed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The commission requires teachers employed through its internship program to be on staff for a full year (1 year).
However, the intern teachers are welcomed whenever TSC posts employment openings for permanent positions.
Basic TSC Requirements
In addition to other things, the commission states that applicants for internship positions should typically:
be younger than 35 years old.
Have / be in possession of personal accident insurance.

TSC QUALIFICATIONS
All Candidates must have
minimum of two (2) principles and one (1) subsidiary pass at “A” Level, or a mean grade of C+ (plus) in KCSE and C+ (plus) in each of the two teaching topics.
possess the following: a) A Bachelor of Education degree in two (2) teaching subjects.
Have a Bachelor’s degree in science or the arts combined with a Post Graduate Diploma in Education a (PGDE) in two topics related to teaching.
Have an Education minor with a Bachelor of Science
Have a bachelor’s degree in arts with a teaching emphasis in two subjects.
NB: The Bachelor of Education holders who have completed a Diploma in Education or have gone through the A level system in the relevant field and have earned a mean grade of C Plain and C Plain in the two teaching courses at KCSE.
A minimum mean grade of C+ (plus) in the KCSE or its equivalent is required for applicants seeking a diploma in teaching, as well as at least C+ (plus) (or a credit pass) in each of the two subjects they plan to teach, or one (I) principle and two (2) subsidiary at the “A” level. They also need a diploma in education from an accredited institution for teacher training.
NB: Diploma Teachers with a mean grade of C (plain) and C (plain) in the two teaching disciplines who graduated on or before 2008 are eligible.
Candidates for primary schools should at least possess a P1 Certificate.
The unique monthly salary for secondary school intern instructors is Ksh 20,000. The teacher is paid Ksh 19,050.00 after all withholdings have been made.
